The quiet power of introverts | BBC Ideas

Image
Video Transcript: I am an introvert and I love it. And I'm not alone. Introverts are everywhere, and our quiet approach to life, our need for solitary time, isn't a flaw - it's a gift . But as an introvert it's not always easy to realize how wonderful you are. The world feels like a place that rewards extroverts . Where being loud is mistaken for being confident and happy. Where everyone has something to say, but nobody listens. A world of open-plan offices, networking parties, and big personalities . For those who speak softly, it's easy to feel left out .  As a child, I blended into the background. Many thought that I had little to say or that I simply didn't like others. But that wasn't true. People often think introverts are shy, or antisocial . But these are misconceptions . Introverts, like anyone, can find socializing fun. But while parties leave extroverts energized , after some time, introverts need to recharge ... away from everyo...

We Need To Rethink Charity

Image
Transcript: Congratulations! You won the lottery and made one million dollars! The first thing you will do is buy yourself a nice car but the second thing you will do is take some of that money and donate it to the poor because you are a good human being.  You buy some clothes and some food, you ship them to Africa and you feel good about it. And that is exactly the problem with charity . What I'm about to say might not be politically correct but it must be said. We need to rethink charity. See, in today's world, it feels good to send food to poor countries. It feels good to volunteer with kids and take that selfie . It feels good to help. And I know how it feels because I did it too.  Two years ago, I donated to 1,000 kids in the slums of the Philippines . I bought them hamburgers and clothes and I gave them out for free and I felt good about it.  But little did I know that I was doing more harm than good . When I bought the food, what I did was essen...

Why Education Will Get Cheaper

Image
BANKRUPT: Restaurants, hotels, and airlines are going bankrupt! But did you know that universities are also going bankrupt! Many people forget about this but universities are a business. They have to pay for professors, for space and for physical buildings. It costs hundreds of millions of dollars to run a university.  And, now because of Covid-19, there are no students left on campus and no more revenue. That's why hundreds of universities will close their doors forever.  This is a big deal! Even the richest universities in the world like Harvard are going in debt. And it all makes sense! Students don't want to pay $40,000 a year just to go on Zoom and get an education. It's just not the same! And families who have lost their jobs cannot afford college anymore. No more students, no more revenue, lots of expenses, bankruptcy.  This is not supposed to depress you. I believe we will get through this every time we had a tragedy humans were able to survive it. We in...

Racial Segregation

Image
Transcript: When I was a kid, I had zero (0) Jewish friends not because I hated Jews but because Jews don't want to live with us. And, us, Arabs , we don't want to live with Jews. In my country, Israel , there is segregation . Arabs live in one place and Jews live in another. We don't go to school together, we don't make friends and we rarely interact . This is segregation and that's why I'm angry. Segregation is a problem not just in my country, but in every country. In London , one of the most diverse cities in the world is actually quite segregated. If you look at the map of London, the Whites live in this part, the Muslims live in another part and the Blacks live in another part. The people are diverse, but they live separately . In the US, entire neighborhoods are dominated by one ethnic class. Baltimore, Washington is 60% Black and Nebraska is 88% White. This segregation is no one's fault . We, humans gravitate to people that share ou...

Five ways to stop getting distracted | BBC Ideas

Image
Do you ever find yourself... Do you ever find yourself trying to concentrate yet can't seem to focus ? Why are we so distracted these days? And is technology the root cause of the problem, or is there something deeper going on?  My name is Nir Eyal , and I've spent the last five years researching and writing about the deeper psychology of distraction . When I found myself struggling with distraction, I decided to do what many people advise and got rid of the distracting technology.  I got myself a flip-phone without any apps . All it did was phone calls and text messages. Then, I got a word processor  from the 1990s without any sort of internet connection. Unfortunately, I found I still got distracted. I'd start reading the book from my bookshelf. I'd tidy-up my desk. I'd take out the trash even - just to avoid the thing that I didn’t want to do. I had only focused on the external triggers - the pings and dings that were leading me towards distr...

Is social media messing with our emotions? | BBC Ideas

Image
My name's Laurence Scott and in my humble opinion, I think that social media is changing the ways both in which we experience the emotions of other people and how we express our emotions publicly. I think the main thing you have to think about in social media is that our emotions are a valuable resource .  So it behoves the people who are designing social media networks - such as Twitter, Facebook - to make our emotions as clearly obvious and evident to others as possible. So you may have noticed on Facebook, one of the first questions you're greeted with is, "What's on your mind?"  Couple of years ago, I noticed sort of a comedy of errors that's brewing in our emotional landscape with social media. So, in the same year, Facebook finally rolled out its six reaction features . So instead of just simply liking things that your friends have posted, you could add the heart or the sad face or the angry face. Mark Zuckerberg at the time said, "What people ...

Do we think differently in different languages? | BBC Ideas

Image
Do we think differently in different languages? There are over 7,000 languages in the world. Does that mean there are 7,000 ways of seeing it? The Whorfian hypothesis as it's known, which is the idea that our language affects our thinking, has been debated for decades, even centuries.  There's a growing amount of experimental evidence that differences across languages have an influence on the way speakers of those languages conceive of the world. We can see that different languages structure the world in different ways, they carve up the various continua and different types of relations in the world.  The way that different languages chop up the world almost can vary, and that does actually influence how you see that world.  "I think language changes everything about the way you think." "I go into a certain mindset, I sound deeper. I don't know why." "I perceive situations differently, I react differently." "I think I'm more grou...

Why I Hate Free

Image
Video Transcript: Free! Free! I hate stuff for free! I can't believe I'm saying this but I don't like free and it's all because of something that happened to me a while back. Two years ago, I went a little bit crazy and decided to get two apartments: one in Israel and one in Palestine.  The idea was simple: Let me give this apartment for free for anyone to sleep there because I wanted people to visit and see both countries at war— Israel and Palestine. You just email me what day you want to stay there and my team will make it happen.  Thousands of people loved that idea and they emailed me in the hundreds. Some even booked the apartment months in advance because after all, it's a free night stay.  This was working. We were fully booked until something happened. People started to cancel. At the last minute, people's plans have changed and they decided they don't want to stay at the apartment anymore. 100% of the bookings were free and 50% of them wer...

Be Careful Of Parkinson's Law

Image
Video Transcript:  Oh my God! I finally understand it! Work expands to the time allowed for it! Work expands to the time allowed for it. This idea changed my life and I think it can change yours. Let's say you want to write a letter and the deadline is 10 p.m. You get a shower, you spend one hour looking for the perfect paper, another hour looking for the perfect pen, another hour thinking of the perfect words and another writing them. By 10 p.m., your letter is done! But if you only had 10 minutes to write the letter, you'll skip the shower, you'll find a piece of paper, find a pen, write it down and you're good to go.  It's the same letter: one took 10 hours to make, another took 10 minutes to make. And, this is work that expands to the time allowed for it. It's called Parkinson's Law and it's a real thing. It's not procrastination , it's not laziness, it's unnecessary work that we do simply because we have time.  This isn't jus...

Why Justice Doesn't Exist

Image
Video Transcript:  I'm going to slap you and you will feel pain. But the first thing you will do is slap me back because you want to get revenge ! You want what is fair , you want what is just , you want justice !  I grew up in a place where justice is very important. I grew up in Israel and Palestine . And, around me,  many people are seeking justice — j ustice for the murder , justice for the kidnapped , justice for the stolen and no one would rest. Not them, not us, until justice is achieved. Just like Hollywood taught us, justice must always be served at the end of the movie.  See? I don't really believe in Hollywood and I don't really believe in justice because I have come to learn that forgiveness is a lot more powerful than justice. And, forgiveness, I learned from a woman that's very, very far away from me called Ernestein. Ernestein lives in Rwanda and she is the most forgiving person I have ever met. She was a victim of the Rwandan geno...
